Ed Burghard – Strengthening Brand America

Today I spoke to to Ed Burghard, CEO of the Burghard Group, whose mission is to dramatically improve the level of – place brand mastery in the U.S. by catalyzing a discussion between private sector experts and economic development professionals on the reapplication of proven product and corporate branding principles.

Success, Ed explains, looks like an increased share of global FDI, which in turn will stimulate accelerated job growth and economic recovery. The underlying assumption is that stronger state brands in aggregate create a strengthened Brand America.

Strengthening Brand America is a Community of Practice for Economic Development professionals. Ed started the project back in 2009. It focuses primarily on taking the principles of product and corporate banding and apply that to branding and promoting places; cities, regions or countries.

The Burghard Group LLC is focused on four things –

  • Helping America be more globally competitive for capital investment by supporting place branding mastery within the economic development profession as a strategy for sustainable economic growth of their local communities.
  • Helping communities impacted by shale gas commercialization avoid the risk of experiencing a boom-to-bust cycle, by supporting economic development professional mastery of strategic planning design and deployment and through the sharing of academic research and identified “hands-on” best practices.
  • Catalyzing a dialogue on the creation of a national energy policy, through the continued effort as a founding Board member of the Nemacolin Energy Institute.
  • Mentoring future economic development professionals as a Fellow of the Levin College of Urban Affairs affiliated with the Cleveland State University Center for Economic Development.
